Madeline Victoria Jewett

Madeline Fleetwood-Jewett, 95, born October 5, 1922 in Sandpoint, Idaho, died December 18, 2017. She was born to Rose and Arthur Fleetwood and adopted by Eleanor and Ben Ewen, when her mother died. Madeline was the youngest of several children born to Rose Hazen-Fleetwood and the last to pass. She graduated from Sandpoint High School and married her high school sweetheart Johnny Meyer. Widowed with one child Joy(AJ), in 1943. Madeline then married Edwin Jewett in 1944 and bore three more children Merle, Julie and Grace. From 1951 to 1970 Madeline was active in raising and supporting her 4 children leading: Cub Scouts, 4-H, Brownies, Girl Scout and Campfire Girls. She was president of the Country women's Extension Club. When her children "left the nest" she joined and supported Concordia and Valparaiso University Guilds. Madeline and Ed Jewett joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aloha, OR, in 1962. "Date night" found them square dancing as active members of Valley Squares; she loved to dance. Together they also founded a family business Northwest Service and Sales, selling school buses and manufacturing campers and canopies for Datsun pickups. Later they built their own shop for their larger corporation Allied Bus and Truck Equipment & Sales. After 26 years of marriage to Ed Jewett, Madeline was widowed in 1970 and moved to Portland in 1972. She joined Trinity Lutheran Church and later Redeemer Lutheran Church. Her employment was with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod followed by Concordia University as a bookkeeper. She also began a lifelong rental business, offering people a, "decent place to live at a decent price." Art and gardening were always a part of Madeline's life. Following her retirement she enrolled in Art classes at Portland Community College fulfilling her passion of painting. Watercolors became her medium of choice and she entered her work in shows and fairs, receiving awards. Floral paintings were coveted because of her ability to use color. Organizations she belonged to included:Alpha Iota Sorority, Genealogy (Legacy) groups,Women of Redeemer, and Portland Art Society. She is survived by 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The Celebration of Madeline's life will be held on January 6th, 2017 at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary.
