Mrs. Cress was born June 20, 1921 in Osawatomie, KS. She passed away peacefully while living with her daughter and son-in-law in Beaverton, OR. Mrs. Cress was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband of 67 years, Marvin D. Cress, in 2013 at the age of 89.
Mrs. Cress was born to Clarence Henry Shively and Vada Ellen Shiveley (née Chamberlin). Her parents and sibling, Emmett, Laura Evelyn, and Martin have also predeceased her. The family moved to Waukegan, IL. Vada died when Lois was about 11 years old. Her father remarried, and her family joined the family of his new wife, Harriet "Hattie" Wickersheim. Lois ultimately came to think of Hattie as her "real mother."
At the start of WWII, Lois met the love of her life, Marvin D Cress Sr., a Navy sailor, at a USO dance in Waukegan, Il. They were married at the close of WWII on September 23, 1945 in Baltimore, MD. Facing a housing shortage in Illinois at the end of the war, they settled in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
A loving mother and homemaker, Mrs. Cress was also a career woman who worked for the State of Virginia for over 20 years. She was a devoted member of the Oaklette United Methodist Church during her 60 years residing in Chesapeake, VA. No local service is planned. Her ashes will be buried next to her husband's at a later date in Wadesboro Cemetery in Calloway County, KY, where many members of her husband's family are also buried.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Cress Peach and husband H. Gil Peach of Beaverton, OR, her son, Marvin D. Cress Jr. and wife I. Noemi Cress of Forest Hills, NY, her granddaughter, Terra K. Gross and husband Joshua Gross and their children, Abigail and Raphael Gross of Evanston, Il., as well as ten beloved nieces and nephews.
