Lawrence Donald Faulkner Sr.

Lawrence Donald Faulkner Sr., a remarkable individual with an adventurous spirit and a heart full of warmth, peacefully passed away on December 30, 2023, at the age of 94. Born on July 24, 1929, in Stockton, California, he was the son of Edwin and Mildred Faulkner.

A proud veteran, Don was drafted into the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, serving with distinction in the third infantry division of the United States Army. His bravery and exceptional service earned him a Bronze Star, a testament to his commitment to duty and his country.

Beyond his military service, Don embraced life's adventures with enthusiasm. He found joy in old-fashioned camping, pitching a tent, and hiking without the aid of GPS coordinates, always seeking the thrill of the unknown. Bird watching, fishing, and flying model airplanes with his children brought him immense happiness. He was known for his knack for building, creating a skate ramp for his youngest son, Michael, and various other projects that may not have always adhered to building codes.

A social and engaging individual, Don cherished meeting new people and striking up conversations with strangers. His family often found him immersed in friendly chats, turning any outing into an opportunity to connect with total strangers. During visits to his daughter Cheryl in California, he became a neighborhood enthusiast, catching Cheryl up on the current gossip, and even introducing Cheryl to her very own neighbors, and then enjoying coffee with them every time he would visit.

Don had a special affinity for dogs, sharing his life with many furry companions over the years, including his most recent canine friend, Princess. His love for animals reflected his kind and nurturing nature.

Don dedicated a substantial portion of his life to public service, working as an electrical engineer for Multnomah County for 25 years and later contributing an additional 15 years to Tualatin Parks and Recreation. His tireless commitment to these roles showcased not only his technical expertise but also his passion for community betterment. Don's enduring work ethic and unwavering dedication to his profession culminated in a well-deserved retirement at the age of 80.

After retirement at the young age of 80, Don enjoyed traveling with his wife and children. Also spending more time with grandchildren and great grandchildren and his dog, Princess. He enjoyed treasure hunting at estate sales for his various collections. He was an avid reader about space, airplanes, history and the bible. Don also enjoyed sharing his many words of wisdom.

After settling in at Cornell Landing, at the young age of 93 Don continued to be active in a variety of interests. Don enjoyed making new friends. He also enjoyed spending time with many family members and long time friends who came to visit. He actively engaged in playing corn hole, church activities, daily exercise, going out for lunch and coffee, going to the library, attending facility dances and birthday parties, going to concerts and plays, Bible study, and fostered quality relationships that enriched his life.

A man of diverse interests, Don enjoyed watching westerns, and listening to various bands. His fascination with ultralight planes and astronomy showcased his curiosity and love for the skies. An engineer at heart, he appreciated the intricacies of his surroundings and the world beyond.

Throughout his life, Don took pleasure in swimming, boxing, baseball, and extensive travel. His commitment to continuous learning and personal growth was unwavering, emphasizing the importance of good character and gratitude.

In his younger years, Don enjoyed street motorcycle riding and even played the trumpet in the Salvation Army band. His varied passions and pursuits illuminated the depth of his character and the richness of his experiences.

Don is survived by his spouse, Shawntel Faulkner; his children, Larry Faulkner, Ed Faulkner, Robert Faulkner, Cheryl Faulkner-Guillory, and Michael Faulkner; children brought into the family, Carmen Toney and Dale Krenz; his children-in-law, Tony Guillory, Heather Faulkner, and Steve Toney; his grandchildren, Jonathan Faulkner, Eva Guillory, Hanna Guillory, Mason Faulkner and Lincoln Faulkner; grandchildren who were brought into the family, Stephanie Toney, Scott Toney and Shyla Krenz; his great-grandchildren, Landon Faulkner and Evelyn Faulkner; his brother, Tom Soucie; and his honorary daughter, Lynn Carver.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Faulkner and Mildred (Soucie); his sister, Edna Faulkner; brothers, Frank Faulkner and Jimmy Soucie; and his first wife, Joan Faulkner.

A proud American who grew up during the Great Depression, Lawrence Donald Faulkner Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and enduring memories.

May his adventurous spirit and warm heart be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is now absent from the body and present with the lord.
