She was born on November 16, 1921 in Seattle to Italian immigrant parents, Angelo & Concetta Carpinito, who farmed land on East Marginal Way in Seattle. Her family included a sister and two brothers, all now deceased.
Johanna worked in downtown Seattle until her early 30s, enjoying life in the city, dancing, and singing. She had a beautiful voice, and regularly sang at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, as well as for weddings and on the radio. She married Armand Moceri on October 24, 1953 and moved from the growing metropolis to a small farm in then rural Pierce County. Once Armand left farming and moved into the car business, he and Johanna settled in Sumner where they raised three children, Mary (Urback), Stephen Moceri, and Christina (Hargrave).
Johanna eventually became Grandma to seven grandchildren and "Gigi" to six great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved fiercely. She had a wry sense of humor, enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, teaching them techniques and sharing recipes they still enjoy today. Her farming roots were evident in the range of orchids she grew.
Armand and Johanna moved to Edgewood in their retirement years and later resided at Frank Tobey Jones in Tacoma until 2016, when they relocated to Holladay Park Plaza, a retirement community in Portland, Oregon. Armand passed in 2016 and Johanna rekindled a vibrant social life in her final years, enjoying friendships and outings in the city with other residents of Holladay Park and frequent visits from her family. She cherished city life in her early years and again in her final years.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be greatly missed.
