Herbert W. Miller passed away peacefully on June 8, 2022. He was 96 years old. Herb was born on May 30th, 1926 in Portland. His parents were Herbert and Elizabeth Miller. He graduated from Richmond Elementary and Franklin High School and was also a 4-year student at Reed College where he majored in mathematics. He learned to play the saxophone in high school.
In 1952, he and Barbara Osborn were joined together in marriage. In 1992 he and Bobbie moved to Brightwood, Oregon where they lived until 2018 when they moved back to Milwaukie in the Portland metro area.
Herb was a veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Navy just prior to the end of the war.
Herb retired in 1979 after a 30-year career throughout Oregon and Washington as an industrial developer. He was employed by the Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway which eventually merged with other regional railroads to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.
He was an avid weather-watcher and frequently reported weather statistics from the Brightwood-Welches area to Portland news station meteorologists. He also wrote the weather column for the Welches “Mountain Times” newspaper for many years. Additionally, he was a long-term volunteer driver for the local Meals on Wheels program in Welches. Everyone who knew Herb would agree he had a great sense of humor and kept people laughing.
Herb enjoyed gardening and achieved Master Gardener status. His primary interest was always his family with whom he enjoyed camping and picnicking, and family get-togethers that included many games of backgammon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marjorie Benson. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Barbara (Bobbie), sons George, Marty and Glen Miller, daughter Judy Johansen, grandsons Ryan and Nick, granddaughters Heidi and Heather and 3 great-grandchildren, Kalib, Jude and Alice.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time.
