George William Harper, 72, of Tigard, Oregon, passed away at the Portland VA Hospital on July 22nd, 2024. He entered this life on January 20, 1952 in Portland, Oregon. George was a devoted husband, father, grand and great grandfather and a proud veteran.
Residing in Tigard for the past five years, George was an active member of his community, having spent six years with the Tigard Eagles and many more with the American Legion. His commitment to service began at the young age of 17 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on his own volition because he wanted to serve his country, which he did honorably. He served 3 tours in Vietnam. He also achieved the rank of Corporal and earned several accolades, including the rifle sharpshooter badge. Following his time in the Marines, he transitioned to the Army, where he served an additional two years before receiving his second honorable discharge in May 1973.
After his military service, George dedicated his career to helping others. He worked as a youth counselor for wayward boys at the McLaren Boys School and the Janis Youth Program. He was actively involved until he retired.
George was an avid dart player back in his day, nearly being sent to England to compete in the sport professionally. Later in life, you could find him shooting the breeze with his family and friends while enjoying a nice glass of Clan McGregor scotch. He would usually follow suit with his favorite cigarette, “Whatever is the cheapest.”
George is survived by his loving wife, Connie LaCombe; daughter, Cassandra LaCombe; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Trena A. Harper.
George will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His unwavering spirit and kindness touched many lives, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone who visited George in his final days, especially the ones who brought candy bars!
George’s urn will be placed at Willamette National Cemetery to be among his brothers and sisters who also bravely served their country. His life celebration will soon be announced.
