Gene was born on February 11, 1927 in Cassville, Missouri to Iver and Lois (Eubanks) Jacobson. The family moved briefly to Idaho when Gene was 14, and then settled in Oregon, where he graduated from Gresham High School. He worked installing furnaces with his father before joining the Coast Guard in 1947, serving honorably for three years.
Upon his return to Portland, he met Joyce Thomsen, and after a whirlwind courtship they were united in marriage in 1950, followed by 68 happy years together. Gene went to work for the Civil Aeronautics Administration (which later became the F.A.A) maintaining navigational aid equipment. After 27 years he “retired”, but served as a contractor at PDX for another ten years.
Gene enjoyed camping with his family, bowling, and working on his perfect lawn and roses, but his main passion during leisure time was golf. He had a running “pot game” with over twenty friends at Pleasant Valley Golf Club, and had scored three holes-in-one, the last when he was 73 years old. He loved being with his family and participating in their activities and events.
Mr. Jacobson was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother, and by two granddaughters, Alexa Dyer and McKenzie Jacobson.
He will be missed and remembered by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Jacobson;
five children, Alan Jacobson and wife Irene, David Jacobson, Joan Gilbert and partner Gary,
Leslie Jacobson and wife Marge, and Michele Dyer and husband Russ;
Siblings Tom Jacobson, Patsy Wagner, Jackie Norton, and Doris Anderson;
and by 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Public visitation will be held on Monday, July 23 from 5-8 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland. A funeral service, with reception to follow, will be celebrated Tuesday, July 24 at 11 am at Lincoln Memorial. A committal service with honors will then take place at Willamette National Cemetery at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, you may support the Children’s Cancer Association or Make-a-Wish Foundation in Gene’s memory.
