Please join us as we celebrate “Mama Bettie” whose legacy will continue to serve the world and God with contagious enthusiasm and love for each person. She was a teacher, counselor, and joy magnet who was refreshingly raw, real, challenging, and courageous. At 87 years of age she finished strong, continuing to counsel and exude joy until she started her new job in Heaven as “Prayer Warrior for the World.”
Bettie was born in Colorado Springs, raised in northeast Portland and attended Grant High School. In 1952, she married Gerald Mitchell after dating three weeks and grew with him over 62 years of marriage. Bettie became a teacher, counselor, and international leader after graduating from Lewis and Clark and Warner Pacific.
After being a substitute teacher in Beaverton schools between 1957 and 1978, Bettie established Good Samaritan Ministries in 1978 to teach nothing but the Kingdom of God. She did not believe in religious systems but believed in loving every neighbor as yourself. The ministry teaches, loves, trains, and counsels and operates in 30 countries. Bettie served in the education, political, Jewish, Arab, and Christian communities locally and internationally in 55 countries where she transformed lives.
Bettie is survived by her children, Michelle Smith, Laura Sweitz, Jennie Mitchell, and Mohammad Bader; nine grandchildren; seven and a half great-grandchildren, and by a sister, Arabelle Cash
The Legacy Celebration is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, October 16, at Rolling Hills Community Church, 3550 SW Borland Road, in Tualatin.
