Barbara Jean Thompson

Born in Seattle, WA, Barbara spent her early years in Toppenish, WA, later moving to Astoria, OR in 1942. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1952. While in college, she was a member and president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and worked at the Oregon Daily Emerald, where she met her future husband, Donald Thompson. When Don passed away in 2018 they had been married 65 years.

Barbara worked at KXL Radio and the Searcy Advertising Agency before being promoted to Mother with the birth of a daughter and two sons. In the ensuing years, she was the PTA President of Alameda Elementary School, a Campfire and Indian Guides leader, a frequent score keeper at numerous Little League games, and a volunteer with Young Audiences. Barbara was the first female president of The Irvington Club in addition to being an avid tennis and bridge player (including—until six months ago—enjoying a weekly game of bridge with longtime friends).

After her children had left the nest, she and Don purchased a small camper van and adventured cross-country twice, plus a trip to Alaska. They also traveled to many international locations, including Europe and New Zealand. In their later years, she and Don spent many happy winters in Borrego Springs, CA, where they had newfound friends from across the continent.

The couple moved to Portland’s Holladay Park Plaza in 2005, where Barbara was involved with various committees and where they made many lasting friendships.

Surviving Barbara is her sister, Linda Williams of Bend, OR; her three children, Susan Middleton (Robert) of Federal Way, WA; Robert Thompson (Anne) of Scottsdale, AZ; and, Steven Thompson (Julia) of Portland, OR; and, her grandchildren Kelsey Middleton, Robin Ware (Craig), and Brian Thompson.
