Barbara J Hildebrand

Barbara Hildebrand passed away on March 16th 2015, at age 88. Barbara is survived by her husband of 66 yrs, Arthur Hildebrand and daughters Debra Underwood, Dana Prentice/McFadden, son in-laws William Underwood and Robert McFadden, sister Beverly Berry, and sister in-law Patricia Jenkins. Barbara was born December 4th 1926 to Walter and Nettie Thorn of Portland Oregon. Barbara attended Ainsworth grade school, and Lincoln high school. She was a graduate from the University of Oregon, she graduated in Art with a Bachelors degree. During her college years she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, where she made lifelong friendships. After graduation she returned to Portland where she met and married Arthur (Art) Hildebrand, in 1950. During their early years together in Astoria, Barbara was the homemaker and mother to Debra and Dana, as well as actively involved with church and community. Barbara and Art moved their family to Portland Oregon, in 1960, where they began their lifelong window covering business, Sellwood Moreland Shades. Barbara’s love for God guided her throughout her life. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal church for 55 yrs, where she served on the altar guild, attended bible study, taught Sunday school and participated on various committees. She enjoyed the cameraderie of the altar guild members and was able to use her artistic skills, creating flower arrangements. Barbara always enjoyed the outdoors, and was involved with skiing, hiking, camping. In particular, many of her special memories were of the times spent at their home on the Oregon Coast, with family and friends. It was at these beach trips that she would enjoy the companionship of her sister and brother in-law (Beverly and Roger Berry) and nieces and their husbands ( Diane and Mark Fraser, Kathy and Steve Roos, Karen and Jon Waldum and Linda and Rob Maletis), as well as their children. Barbara had a zest for life and was ready for any and all adventures. One of those passions was for travel. She and Art traveled extensively, visiting Hawaii, Europe, England, Mexico, Caribbean, U.S. and more. They also enjoyed just jumping in the car for a weekend trip. Bridge was also a passion. Barbara and Art were members of a bridge club for many years, where they forged lifelong relationships. The times in-between were filled with volunteer work, cooking classes and art projects. She was a loving caring wife, mother, friend, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor. We will miss her smile. We will remember her with love. She will continue to live forever in our memories.
