Aloysius (Al said the last six letters of his name were silent) or uncle as he was called by most people was born September 17, 1915 in Subiaco, Arkansas. He was the fourth of eleven children born to Kate and Louis Classen. He graduated from high school in Charleston, Arkansas and moved to Salem, Oregon to attend college at Oregon State where he graduated with a masters degree in chemistry. Al soon started after college working at Alcoa where he stayed for over 30 years. Although he worked with aluminum his passion was working with wood. He built many desks, chest of drawers or whatever someone wanted. That is not where his wood working ended. Al has probably cut, split, and stacked over 100 cords of fire wood. Al was interested in genealogy before it was popular. He traced his ancestors back to the 1700’s in churches and court houses in Germany. He led an interesting life in his 100 plus years always wanting to learn more. Al also had a deep love of God and was still going to church until he was not able. Al will be sorely missed by many people. He is survived by his sister Loretta and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Florin Ardeleanu Adult Care Home who took such personal care of him in his final days and also Mt. Hood Hospice. A funeral mass will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday June 10, 2017 at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Sandy, Oregon.
