Alan grew up in Portland, OR and graduated from Grant High School in 1947. He earned his degree from Oregon State University. He enjoyed a satisfying career as a U.S. State Department Foreign Services officer, serving in Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, Italy, and Brazil. He was fluent in Spanish and Italian. After retirement, Alan’s diplomatic and language skills were used in a series of successful kidnap/hostage negotiations in Latin America.
His first marriage ended in divorce, and he enjoyed a long and happy marriage with his second wife Brenda. Alan became a Roman Catholic in 2015. His parents and sister Marianne Bowes predeceased him. Besides his wife Brenda, he is survived by his beloved children Kenneth Alan “Kam” (Mary Shea), Michael (Tara), Laura (Michael), beloved grandchildren Alexander, Sebastian, Henry and Hazel, nephew Scott Bowes (Catherine) and family.
A funeral Mass will be held Friday, February 10, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Madeleine Church, 3123 N.E. 24th Ave., Portland, OR 97212.
