Falmouth, Maine- LCDR Stephen L. Porch, Ret., 73, died on January 5, 2013 after a long illness. The son of Herbert M. and Miriam (Letson) Porch, he was born in Portland, Maine in 1939. He graduated from Deering High School, Fryeburg Academy and the University of Maine where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry. Stephen spent many summers at Frye’s Leap Camp For Boys, first as a camper, and then as a counselor. He served 21 years in the Navy as a helicopter pilot, initially flying rescue missions in Vietnam, and later as a flight instructor. He received many citations and awards including the Silver Star. He is survived by a sister Joan Gulovsen and her husband Arthur of Wellesley, MA., a sister Sheila Broome and her husband Algie of Madison, MS., a brother Herbert T. Porch and his wife Martha of Cumberland, ME., a sister Martha Goldsmith and her husband Stephen of Lovell, ME., and nine nieces and nephews. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. At Stephen’s request there will be no services.
