On November 2, 2024, Sally Ann Chaplin, a lifelong resident and devoted educator in Westbrook, passed away at the age of 76. Born in Portland to Mortimer and Helen (Swain) Chaplin, Sally shared her life with her twin brother, Richard W. Chaplin. She graduated from Westbrook High School and spent a year at Kents Hill School before pursuing higher education. Sally earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Maine, Farmington, followed later by a Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Southern Maine.
With over 40 years of service, Sally dedicated her career to teaching within the Westbrook school system. She had no children of her own, but she cherished her students as if they were her own, going above and beyond to create enriching experiences in her classroom. Her commitment to education was recognized in 2004 when she was honored as Teacher of the Year while teaching fifth grade at Congin School. Sally’s classrooms were a place of adventure, where she ignited a passion for learning and left a lasting impact on her students.
Outside the classroom, Sally found joy in gardening, nurturing the many flowers that adorned her property. She also had a deep affection for animals, having cared for numerous dogs throughout her life, as well as a beloved pony named Kitty in her youth.
Sally was predeceased by her parents, her brother Richard, and several aunts and an uncle. She is survived by her cousins, Brenda R. Good of Cape Neddick and Gail R. Gordon of Bangor.
Sally’s family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avita of Stroudwater for the loving and compassionate care they provided, making it a second home for her. They also extend their thanks to the dedicated team from Compassus Hospice, who supported Sally during her final days. Her trademark smile will be deeply missed.
