Born in Portland in 1965, Michael was the oldest son of Cheryl Vayo Hoglund and Michael Hoglund Sr. Attending Portland schools, Michael grew up in North Deering and graduated from Deering High School. In his younger years he was an avid runner, played basketball, baseball and was known for organizing the neighborhood kids to participate in whiffle ball and touch football tournaments. At an early age, Michael began a lifelong enjoyment of animals of all sorts. He was always bringing home strays or persuading his mother to let him have gerbils, guinea pigs, bunnies, turtles, cats, dogs…and whatever else he could get her to say yes too. Michael never wanted just one of anything. This included his animals. He convinced his mother that the gerbils he had were both males (they were not!) Our house was soon filled with over 50 gerbils who got loose one day; we could hear them scratching in the walls for months. Later in life Michael turned his home in Scarborough into a mini farm with; pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, cats, birds, lizards, fish, turtles and the list goes on and on. Michael also loved plants and bushes of any origin. Michael, like his mother, was blessed with two green thumbs. His gardens were vast and beautiful.
His love for plants and animals was only matched by his love for people. Family was greatly important to Michael. He loved big family gatherings, holidays, card night and any chance to celebrate a birthday. Michael also loved sports, talking constantly with patrons and friends about the achievements, controversies, and trivia of professional sports. The debates never ended. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and at ease in his company, and his infectious laughter could brighten the darkest days. Michael was a true entertainer, always ready with a quick joke or funny story to make people laugh. This was most evident at Sirloins Butcher Shop and restaurant which he owned and operated. He could be found their most days, leaning against a meat cooler greeting his customers or at the restaurant bar playing cribbage with his friends and patrons.
Michael is survived by his children, Julia Hoglund of Vallejo, CA, Michael Hoglund III of Scarborough, and Danielle Hoglund of Saco and grandchild Natalie. Michael is also survived by his siblings, Ann-Marie (Hoglund) Mayberry and her husband Bob; nephew and niece Joshua and Emma Mayberry of Cape Elizabeth, Mark Hoglund and his wife Tammy and nephews and nieces Mark, Brittany, Joseph and Kayla Hoglund of Windham; Melissa (Hoglund) Lamontagne and her husband David and nephew Gage Lamontagne of Biddeford and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Michael shared his life’s passions with his beloved friend Patty Brown. He also had a special place in his heart for Cindy Gossom, whom he was a natural support to.
The suddenness of Michael’s passing brought forth an outpouring of grief and family support from Michael’s many friends and scores of loyal customers. Michael was a friend to all who knew him. Perhaps uniquely, Michael will be missed by people, pets, and plants.
