Concord, MA- Marian Della MacPherson, a bookkeeper and accountant for more than thirty years who spent most of her life in Portland, Maine, died peacefully in her sleep in Concord on March 6, 2022. She was 102 years old. She had lived on her own until age 99.
Marian was born in Portland, in 1919 to Marie (Christensen) Allen and Ernest Hayes Allen. The oldest of eight children, she grew up in North Yarmouth, ME. She graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, ME and Portland Business College.
Her career began at J.E. Goold and Company in Portland in 1939, and when she left in 1960, she was head of the bookkeeping department. At J.E. Goold, she met the love of her life, John Mason MacPherson. The couple married in September 1957. Marian continued her career, working part-time as an accountant from 1965 to 1979 at Meloons Florist in Portland.
Marian and her husband lived in Portland until they retired in 1979 to Panther Pond in Raymond, ME. He died in 1999. Two years later, she moved to Carlisle, MA, to be near her daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons, and then to Concord for the last three years.
She was an avid cribbage player who taught her grandchildren to play at an early age. She was a keen reader and loved solving crossword puzzles. She also would knit intricate sweaters and other woolens for family members. A wonderful gardener, she had a love of all plants, flowers and birds.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her seven siblings: Frances Kingsford, Della Chase, Myrtie D’Ascanio, Eva Tuttle, Ernest Allen, Kenneth Allen, and Gordon Allen.
Marian is survived by her daughter, Holly Salemy (Louis) of Concord, and three grandsons, Matthew of Portsmouth, NH, Christian of Somerville, MA, and Thomas of Seattle, WA. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in North Yarmouth, ME.
