SOuth Portland, ME - Mabel "Ann" Gorman passed away May 7, 2023, at South Portland Nursing Home, after several years of declining health.
Ann was born in Portland on 7/15/1936, the oldest child of Richard and Madeline Clark Hazel. After losing her father at an early age, to WWII, she grew up in a home dominated by two strong women, her mother and Aunt Ev, amongst her siblings and cousins, in Ferry Village in South Portland. Ann graduated from South Portland High School in 1954.
Ann married Philip Gorman on 11/30/1963, and they settled in South Portland to raise their family. She loved being a Mom, staying home while their kids were young, and later working as a CNA at South Portland Nursing Home and VNA Home Hospice. Ann took pride in providing exceptional care and cherished the bonds she made with residents and coworkers.
Upon retirement, Ann and Phil became snowbirds, spending summers in Maine and winters in Bonita Springs, FL, where they made many good friends and memories.
Ann loved crocheting, always prepared to give anyone an afghan or hat, reading a good mystery, playing card games, winning of course, and going ‘upta’ camp, where she would challenge anyone to a game of horseshoes.
Ann was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Philip, her siblings George, Evelyn, and Arlene, and her cousins who were like siblings, Raymond, Ginny, and Melvin. She is survived by her children David (Christine) Gorman, of Chatham, IL, Daniel (Nancy) Gorman, of Salisbury, MA, and Deanna (Michael) McCutcheon, of South Portland, ME, and grandchildren, Ian McCutcheon, Mackenzie Gorman, and Giavanna Gorman, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at South Portland Nursing Home, for the loving care Ann received in her final years, as well as to the caring staff at Beacon Hospice, who provided extra care and comfort in her final months.
A graveside service for both Ann and Philip, will be held at 1pm on July 15, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Portland.
In honor of Ann’s memory, a donation could be made to your local animal shelter.
