Windham: Hazel Violet Mason Colson, 103, went to be with the Lord Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Ledgewood Manor in Windham. She was born in Levant February 19, 1908 a daughter of the late Fred A. and Cora (Long) Mason.
Hazel attended Bangor High School and graduated from Gilman Commercial College of Bangor. In 1929 she married Oliver B. Colson of Winterport, the love of her life who predeceased her February 21, 2005. They shared nearly 76 years of marriage together and were an inseparable couple. Hazel was employed by Blake, Barrows & Brown and Queen City Real Estate of Bangor for many years. In 1968 they moved to So. Portland to be near their daughter and family. Together they traveled to Florida for 19 winters where they joined Avon Park Grange and Avon Park Winter Guest Club. Hazel was very active playing shuffle board where she received many trophies. She was also a life member of Longfellow Chapter #41 of Eastern Star, South Portland. While in Bangor she was a member of First Baptist Church and after moving to South Portland became a member of Central Square Baptist Church of Portland. Her favorite hobbies were crafts and making quilts.
Hazel is survived by her daughter Violet Sferes and her husband John of Windham; three grandchildren: Cheryl Conroy and her husband James of South Portland, Anthony Sferes and his wife Sumida of Windham, and Diane Morissette of Norway; eight great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Christopher, Benjamin, Emily, Nicole, Kristina, Timmy and Mason; she also will be missed by several nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was predeceased by her older brother Donald Mason and a brother who died before she was born, Onville Delma Mason.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation 4-6 pm Wednesday October 5, 2011 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford Street, Portland where a funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm with the Reverend Philip Shearman officiating. Committal service will be held 11 am Thursday October 6, 2011 at South Levant Cemetery, Horseback Rd., Levant.
