1927 - 2022
SCARBOROUGH- Elizabeth Anne (Cooney) Allen, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022 at the Enclave of Scarborough, where she was surrounded by her adoring family. She was born to James and Dorethea Snow Cooney on July 23,1927 in Portland, Maine where she lived a full and active life and was loved by all who knew her.
Elizabeth (known to all as Betty) lived most of her life in Portland, Maine and graduated from Deering High School in 1945. Following high school, Betty worked at the Telephone Company and Portland City Hall. On August 22, 1949, Betty married Kenneth Colman Allen, Jr. Their marriage of 62 years exemplified enduring love and commitment.
Betty was truly one of a kind. She never said ‘no’ to an outing, she stayed active and healthy by exercising weekly at Lifeline and later, Basics. She loved beautiful fresh cut flowers and had a knack for arranging them, so much so that she volunteered at the Maine Medical Center's Flower Box for over 30 years. Betty shone the brightest when among her family. She never missed a sporting event, a performance, or a birthday party. She loved all sweet treats, donuts and lobster rolls, colorful sweater sets, watching Dancing with the Stars, and the Red Sox. She was incredible at crossword puzzles and enjoyed participating in Bridge Club and Bingo games. She was an avid knitter and made beautiful Christmas stockings and sweaters for her entire family. For over 20 years, Betty attended every show at the Ogunquit Playhouse Theater, loving life, but above all else, she loved her family.
Betty is survived by her son, James, and wife, Melissa Allen, Peter, and wife, Jennifer Allen, and daughter, Judi and husband, Ted Sutton, her grandchildren, Amanda, and husband Ian Nurse, Ashley, and husband Ryan Kent, Amy Allen, Karly Allen, Ian Allen, Matthew Sutton and Nicholas Sutton, and great-grandchildren, Riley and Addison Nurse. A private funeral service will be held on Friday, October 21, and a celebration of life will be held in the spring. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Enclave of Scarborough for their loving care over the last few months. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at: https://fundraising.mmc.org/bbch-donate-now or mailed to Maine Medical Center, Philanthropy Department 22 Bramhall St. Portland, ME 04103
