Charles Lawrence Grubb Jr.

FALMOUTH - Charles Lawrence “Charlie” Grubb Jr., 82, of Falmouth passed away on June 10, 2018, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family after a recent diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer. Charlie was born on December 15, 1935 in Portland Maine, and was the son of Emma (Butts) and Charles L. Grubb Sr.

At the age of 10, Charlie moved from Portland to Falmouth where he attended D.W. Lunt School and graduated from Falmouth High School in 1955. He was the class marshall and recipient of the Sampson D. Plummer award also known as “The Spirit of Falmouth High School” for his outgoing, enthusiastic, and caring nature.

Charlie joined the United States Naval Reserves in 1953 and went active duty in the summer of 1955 following graduation. He served on the USS Truckee AO 147, as a boatswain mate at its commissioning in Philadelphia of that same year. On July 15, 1955, while on a weekend pass, he married his high school sweetheart, Maureen M. McCann, they were married for 63 years but together for a total of 67. He was honorably discharged in 1961 after eight years of service.

In the summer of ‘57, while in Naval Reserves, he was hired at the Portland Water District. He retired in 1998 after 41 years as an inspector. He continued as an independent contractor doing inspections for the Portland Water District for another ten years, until he had his first stroke in June of 2008.

Charlie had an absolute love of baseball. At age 9 he was the bat boy for the Portland Pilots, which was the farm team for the Philadelphia Phillies. He continued and shared his love for baseball with the youth of Falmouth. Charlie was known as “Mr. Baseball”. During the 50 plus years of dedication and involvement in the Falmouth Little League, he served on the board, was in charge of fundraising, and volunteered to help build and maintain the ball fields. In addition, he coached baseball, softball, and umpired prior to his children’s participation, which carried on through his grandchildren and many others until 2008. In recognition of all of his hard work and time he put in by laying the foundation of today's little league and softball program, Falmouth Little League dedicated and named the senior league baseball field, the “Charles L, Grubb Jr. Field” in 1985 and was rededicated in his honor in 2008.

He was an active member of Falmouth Congregational Church for 63 years and served on numerous committees including the church council/trustee. He volunteered to usher, teach Sunday School, and played a crucial role in organizing the monthly bean suppers and the annual “Holly Days Fair”. During the winter months, Charlie was an active member of Stuart Congregational Church, in Stuart, Florida, where he volunteered with the Men’s club by cooking for the monthly breakfast. Charlie was affectionately known as the “Baconator”.

For many years, he was a volunteer Falmouth Firefighter, while working hand in hand with the Falmouth Police Department at their request, in assisting troubled youth. He worked his way and became a 32nd degree mason during his fifty plus years of service. He was a participating member of the Falmouth Lions for 30 plus years, and during that time he served as “King Lion” for two years and was awarded “Lion of the Year” in 1986/1987. Charlie served as a member of the board at Pine Grove Cemetery for 50-plus years, with the last 24 years as its President. Because of who Charlie was, with his dedication to family, friends, the community, and his selfless giving of himself to others, he was recognized and awarded with “Falmouth Citizen of the Year” in 1985.

Charlie is best remembered for his easy and outgoing nature, which incorporates everyone he meets. His love of people and his appreciation of being outdoors, which included; camping (in both Maine and Florida), gardening, fixing things, etc., has been meticulously passed down to his family and friends through his infectious nature, charm, and bubbly personality. The way he lived, is a testimony to the meaning of unconditional love, which he spread to every life he touched.

Charles is survived by his loving wife Maureen (McCann), sister Ethel Creamer of Portland, mother-in-law “Mom” Florence McCann. Children; Lawrence “Larry” Grubb of Stuart FL, Theresa “Terri” and her husband Dana Collins of Falmouth. Grandchildren; Billy, Charles, Ashley, and Jessica and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Marie Frobus and Patricia Valley, and granddaughter Heather Grubb.
