Barbara was born in 1927, the second child of Maurice Hincks and Elizabeth Small Hincks. After graduating from North Yarmouth Academy, Barbara worked as a secretary. During that time, she met her future husband, best friend, and love of her life, Don White. Barbara and Don wanted a family, so they adopted two boys, Michael and Timothy. They also decided to start a business, White Bros. Inc. In the beginning, Barbara was the secretary, bookkeeper, radio dispatcher, and anything else that was needed at White Bros., while at the same time raising her two boys. As the business grew and moved out of the house, Barbara was able to devote more time to her family and community. During these years they built a camp on Little Sebago Lake next to Bob and Bertha White. The family spent many summers there surrounded by her large extended family and many friends. These times always were special and offered her many good memories over the years.
Barbara volunteered for many years at the Pineland Center and at the Westbrook College Day Care Center. She was a member of the Prides Corner Congregational Church, where she was a member of the Diaconate. She was also a member of the Portland Museum of Art and the Woodfords Women’s Club. Barbara loved to travel and took many trips, including trips to Bermuda, Aruba, and Europe. Throughout her life, Barbara had many true and lasting friendships. She also loved music, especially big band swing. Most of all, Barbara loved spending time with her family and friends.
Barbara had an effect on many peoples’ lives and she leaves us all with a portion of her love, compassion, patience, and sense of humor. We are all better people for having known her and for having been a part of her life. Many people referred to Barbara as a real lady, and all who knew her would agree.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald; her son, Timothy; her granddaughter, Annie; her brother, Maurice Hincks; and her sister, Elizabeth Hincks.
Barbara is survived by her son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Monic; her daughter-in-law, Dorothy; four grandchildren, Jenna (John) Klucsik, Joshua White, Elizabeth White, and Rachel White; and Owen her great-grandson.
