Margaret “Peggy” Sheehan, 85, of Port Orange, FL passed away at her home August 9, 2016. Born November 17, 1930 in Syracuse, NY to Frank & Mary Sheehan, Peggy relocated to Florida in 1969. An active member of the Catholic Church of the Epiphany, Peggy was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma & Phi Delta education honor societies. Having taught for 17 years in New York, she was in the 2nd graduating class of LeMoyne College in Syracuse NY and served as the former president of the Junior Classical League of New York State in the 1960’s. Originally teaching 5th and 6th grade, Peggy made the switch to teaching high school foreign language, eventually earning three master’s degrees in education and foreign languages.
Upon relocating to the Daytona Beach area, Peggy was inducted into the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and found enjoyment teaching for 28 years in the Volusia County School District. Honored as Volusia County School Teacher of the Year in the early 1980’s, Peggy taught at both Spruce Creek and Mainland High Schools, as a foreign language teacher specializing in Latin and French, before making the switch to guidance for the last 10 years of her career.
Peggy is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen (Larry) Corso of Syracuse, NY; two nephews, Larry (Lisa) Corso of Syracuse, NY and August Corso of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and one niece, Theresa (Dan) Corso, of Syracuse, NY and many friends and loved ones. Her family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Peggy’s wonderful caregiver and dear friend, Rosemary Trayers and the Halifax Health Hospice for their dedicated care during Peggy’s final days.
Friends, family, and former students are invited to a Funeral Mass to be held Saturday, 8/13/16, at 11am at the Catholic Church of the Epiphany, 201 Lafayette St, Port Orange FL. In place of flowers, the family asks that you please consider donating to the Catholic Church of the Epiphany, where Peggy served actively in the RCIA and Ministry to the Sick programs.
