John was born in Trenton, N.J., where he lived until moving to Port Orange in 1989. Before moving to Florida, he worked at Union Camp Corporation at the Trenton Facility and was a member of the of the Bordentown Elks. In Florida, he was a member of the Port Orange Elks and was an avid pool player where he played in multiple leagues and championship teams. The love of the sport brought a lot of joy into his life, especially the many people and friends he played with that became like family.
Son of the late John and Doris Schmidt, he is survived by his sister, Sharon Slayback of Estero, FL, and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dawn Schmidt of Port St. Lucie, FL; a nephew Michael K. Carnevale of Lawrence, NJ; two nieces, Samantha Schmidt and Jessica Maypole, both of Port St. Lucie, FL; three great-nephews and one great-niece, Johnathan, Dylan, Emmett, and Lillian; special cousins Garrett and Kathleen Garry of Port Orange, an aunt, uncle, cousins, and many close friends.
Due to Covid-19, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through their website at www.jdrf.org.
