James Dearborn

Col. James W. Dearborn, USAF RET., 93, beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather “slipped the surly bonds of Earth” for the last time on December 28, 2021, in Port Orange, Florida. Jim was born in Dorchester, MA, and was a graduate of Horace Greely High School (Chappaqua, NY) Class of 1948. In 1950, Jim began a long and illustrious career in the United States Air Force.

During his over 30 years of service, he flew close to 7,000 hours in a variety of fighter aircraft, primarily the F-4 Phantom II (3,800 hours), completing over 300 missions during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Later in his career, Jim was appointed Commander of the 4485th Test Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida, and Group Commander of Aviano Air Base, Italy. His final posting was as Commander of the 2nd Air Delivery Group at Langley AFB in Virginia. During his Air Force career, Jim frequently distinguished himself and received numerous awards and

citations including the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight and the Bronze Star for meritorious services.

Upon retirement from the Air Force, Jim and Joan moved one last time to Florida, partly for the warm weather and access to many top-notch golf courses. Retirement didn’t slow Jim down; in 1984 he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also offered private pilot lessons and became an IRS Enrolled Agent and worked for H&R Block for 25 years as an instructor, office manager, and preparer. Jim continued to honor those who had served their country by being very active with his local VFW Post 3282 where he held the office of Quartermaster and Commander. He also served as Commander of VFW District 19. In addition to his steadfast commitment to military and community service, Jim had a powerful bond with his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and looked forward to road trips up north to see friends and family and the many holidays spent together at their home in Port Orange.

Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan, his constant companion, golf partner and unwavering caregiver; daughter Karen (Robert); son David (Rebecca); granddaughters Ariane and Kelly; grandsons Ryan and Jason; and great-granddaughter, Margaret Ann.

In honor of his dedicated service to his country and in keeping with his wishes, Jim will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on Jim’s behalf to VFW Post 3282 or the charity of your choice.
