Joan Ann Valentine, age 93, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at Westminster Village in Dover, Delaware. Joan was born on October 23, 1929 to Peter and Anna Lang in Jamaica, New York. She graduated from Mary Louis Academy in 1948 and St. John's University in 1953. She was a 1st grade teacher in Valley Stream, New York for several years before she and her first husband moved to Stony Brook, New York, where they raised their two children. She was an excellent homemaker known for her cooking, baking and crafts. She enjoyed the beach, gardening and bridge; Joan was a long-time member of several bridge groups. As a devout Catholic, she also volunteered her time for many years at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket.
She is now reunited with the love of her life, her first husband, Leonard J. Schnappauf. Joan was also predeceased by her son, Paul W. Schnappauf, two sisters, and her second husband, Joseph Valentine. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Sherlock (with husband, Mike) of Camden, Delaware, daughter-in-law Janice Schnappauf, of Neshanic Station, New Jersey, grandchildren Christina Gawlas (with husband, Ryan), Stephen Sherlock (with wife, Nicole), Kirsten Schnappauf, Erin Schnappauf, great-grandchildren Graham, Adelyn, Vaughn and Palmer Joan, several nieces and nephews and seven step-children.
Her family would like to especially thank her long-time caregiver, Iris Mendoza, as well as the dedicated staff at Westminster Village who provided her with compassionate care.
A Mass will be celebrated on December 1, 2022 at 10:30am at St. Mark's R.C. Church in Shoreham, New York, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.
