Gary G. Smith, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents Virgil and Wilma Smith. He is survived by his loving wife Linda of 59 years. He is also survived by his children Eric Smith, Laurie Ellis, Kristen Smith, his brother and sister-in-law Norm & Karen Montgomery and others who abundantly loved him. Gary graduated from Nova Southeastern University with his Doctor of Education Degree. He started his career teaching at Susquehanna Valley Schools and continued on to Broome Community College for 27 years where he was an Administrator and Vice President for both Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, was Director of Counseling and Professor of Human Services Courses. He was a Professor for Binghamton University for 37 years where he taught human development, social sciences, student affairs administration, addiction courses, group counseling and counseling, and clinical assessment. He also was a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, granted by the Provost at Binghamton University, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Public Service by the State University of New York. After his retirement from Binghamton University, he was the Executive Vice President at Davis College and was a Trainer and Consultant for Southern Tier of NY Professional Development Consortium providing a variety of seminars. He was loved by his students and the faculty staff. Gary was a member of the Lenape Nation and was studying the language of Lenape. He provided guidance and support as a drug and alcohol rehabilitator and facilitator for Habilitat “The Place of Change”. He was a strong supporter and advocate of people striving to make changes to their lives. He believed in giving back and was always compassionate toward others. Gary was a Christian man that was strong in his beliefs and faith. He was also a man who loved to laugh, hunt, spend time with his family, his students and in nature. He loved Native American and Hawaiian cultural values. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
