Pat Harvey Memories
Our dear Aunt Pat was the last of five children born in twelve years to Margaret and Reginald Harvey. Life changed for Pat when her father Reginald died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 58. Pat was only fourteen at the time. Her closest brother Alan was sixteen. The other family members were already out of the house attending work or school. Because of this Pat and Alan had to stay home and do chores. Pat accomplished Grades 9, 10, and 11 by correspondence from the Saskatchewan Dept. of Education. She stayed home for two years so her brothers Walter and Alan could finish school. They came home on weekends to do chores. This delayed her graduating from Grade 12 by a couple of years.
Pat met her dear friend Isobel Hoskins ( at the time) in Grade 12. They sat next to each other as their last names started with H. They continued together in the School of Nursing program for a three year diploma in Saskatoon City Hospital. Pat graduated at age 23. Then she worked casual from so she could also help her Mom on the farm. Then she went to Alert Bay for thirteen months, Her sister Kathleen ( Kay) and brother in law Ed lived there at the time as well as her little niece Anne. Baby Patricia arrived while Pat was there.
Pat followed her friend Olga from Alert Bay to Golden for six months. It seemed like the end of the earth. She worked at one more place in the Emergency Department of the Saskatoon City Hospital before her trip to England with a nursing friend Betty. They spent seven months visiting relatives and staying with Aunt Kit (her mother's sister) in Ashford, England. After that she had many nursing jobs. These include Staff and Head Nurse of the Recovery Room at the University Hospital in Saskatoon. Before she left Saskatchewan she attended U of Sask. to start her Batchelor of Nursing degree with a diploma in Nursing Unit Administration.
For the next five years Pat lived in Victoria. She worked as a Head Nurse in the Recovery Room of Royal Jubilee Hospital. Then back to Calgary for three
years as a Head Nurse in Rockyview Hospital. From there she went back to Saskatoon to complete her Batchelor of Nursing degree. She had seven sessions to complete. Then she returned to Calgary and was hired by the Foothills Hospital in many different positions including Evening Coordinator, Head Nurse Reactivation Unit to Discharge Planning coordinator.
Besides her work she belonged to the Field Naturalist group and Camera Club. She took hundreds and hundreds of slides. She had artistic talent taking slides of flowers and birds. Her travels took her to Australia and New Zealand twice, Costa Rica, Hawaii and the Maritimes with her many friends.
To Close a Poem- Author Unknown
God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be So He closed his arms around you and whispered "Come to Me"
You did not deserve what you went through
and so He gave you rest
God's garden must be beautiful He only takes the best
So when we saw you sleeping so peaceful and
free of pain
We could not wish you back
to suffer that again
Good bye Aunt Pat, we love you and will keep your memory in our hearts forever. Until we meet again!
Love your nieces and nephews.
