Dan was born in Nanaimo on May 12th, 1951. He was the youngest of four children born to Clifford and Anne Aasen. He met Marilyn, his wife of 51 ½ years, shortly after high school graduation and they married in June 1972. Together they raised three children: Nicole, Aaron, and Danielle.
He began his 36-year career in logging at age 18 and retired at age 54. He worked at Sproat Lake Division, the first 19 years in Engineering and the remainder driving logging trucks. The first number of years he spent driving large off-road trucks and ended his career driving highway trucks. He often reminisced about the good times at work after he retired.
Dan and Marilyn’s first home was in Cherry Creek where the kids were born and went to school. He was very involved in his children’s lives, coaching soccer and softball for Aaron, and helping coach and cheering on his girls over many years of their softball.
Church attendance was always a constant in his life. In his younger years, Dan played on church ball and hockey teams, sang in the choir, and for many years gave of his time helping in the sports program at Nanoose Bay Pentecostal Teen Camp. The entire family participated, and many lasting memories and friendships were formed there. That week was truly a highlight for Dan and family every summer.
As a young boy, Dan enjoyed playing soccer and baseball and developed his love for fishing with his neighbourhood friends in a nearby creek. Later he fished with his dad, and once his own children came along, fishing became a family event down the canal. Later in life, he fished with his son, Aaron, some good friends, and his brother. He was rarely skunked.
Retirement afforded him many opportunities to travel, always with friends or the whole family. Many of the vacations were to Mexico or Hawaii as well as two trips to Europe. He enjoyed spending time helping his children with whatever they needed and playing with his grandkids. Dan spent the last 34 years living on Sproat Lake. He loved the tranquility, beauty, wildlife, and the great community of neighbours.
Dan passed away at RJH, Victoria on January 11th, 2024. He will be terribly missed by Marilyn, daughter Nicki and husband Seth, their children Hannah and Isaac, his son Aaron and his wife Krista, their boys Leif and Finn, and daughter Danielle and husband Chris, and their children Ezra and Levi, as well as by many friends and extended family.
We will celebrate Dan’s life with a service for family and friends on Thursday, January 18th, 2024 at 1pm at Christian Reformed Church, Roger St., Port Alberni. No flowers by request.
John 14:1-3
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
