Shirley Myrick Lewis was born to Odis and Velma Myrick on December 31, 1936. She was born in a dormitory on the campus of PRCC, which was functioning as a makeshift hospital at the time, and was the second born of 8 children. At the age of 18, she married J.L. Lewis, and they had 5 children, Kelvin Lewis, Rhonda Lewis, Kent Lewis, the late Kristi Lewis, and Katrina Lewis Mizell. She attended business school in New Orleans as a teenager, and worked as a bookeeper for many years before retiring. After this, she was a successful Avon representative for many years. Shirley enjoyed gardening, reading books,and acquiring collectibles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them about plants.
Shirley passed away peacefully at home on the evening of May 28, with family nearby. She was preceded in death by her daughter Kristi on November 20, 1976, and her husband, J. L. Lewis on March 21, 1999. She is survived by 4 children Kelvin Lewis, Rhonda Lewis, Kent Lewis and Katrina Mizell, daughter-in-law Vickie Horne Lewis, as well as 5 grandchildren, Raina and Ramsey Hunt, Alexandria Lewis, Angela Gonzalez, John Michael Fisher, and 2 great-grandchildren, Penelope Brown and Declan Kinsey.
She will be cremated, as per her wishes, and a memorial service will be held at a later time, to be determined by the course of the pandemic. Any cards, plants or well wishes can be sent to her daughter, Katrina Mizell's home at 422 North Columbia Street in Poplarville, MS 39470.
