Johnnie McKinney Whitten, age 86, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at the Page Greenhouse in the Traceway Retirement Community after an extended illness. She was born February 5, 1926 in Lee County to Ben and Fannie Sheffield McKinney. She graduated from Mooreville High School in 1945. She married Joe Brooks Whitten on February 10, 1951. She was a member of Endville Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School, WMU and the Senior Citizens Group. She retired from Central Service Association of Tupelo after 30 years of service. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and follower of Christ. She enjoyed sewing and needle work, flower and vegetable gardening and spending time with her friends and family.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Rev. David Westmoreland and Rev. Bobby Holland officiating; burial will follow in the Endville Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her son: Joe Phil Whitten (Betty) of Pontotoc, MS; two daughters: Betty Womack (Ralph) of Dekalb, MS and Becky Jackson (Ricky) of Tupelo, MS; one sister: Jeane McKinney of Mooreville, MS; seven grandchildren: Valerie Peeples (Bob), Venetta Duff (Al), Victoria Kilpatrick (T.J) all of Pontotoc, MS, Veronica Minier (Edward) Dallas, TX, Joanna Manning (Davis) of West Point, MS, Anna Claire Jackson of Nashville, TN and Brooks Jackson of Tupelo, MS; eleven great-grandchildren: Adam Peeples of Birmingham ,AL, Daniel Peeples (Casey), Luke Peeples, Hannah Kathryn Peeples, Daynalee Duff, Andrew Duff all of Pontotoc, MS, Boone Waldon, Bailey Waldon, Zeke Minier all of Dallas, TX, Connor Kilpatrick and Brooklyn Claire Kilpatrick of Pontotoc, MS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 35 years and a sister: Joyce McKinney.
Pallbearers will be: Brooks Jackson, T.J. Kilpatrick, Davis Manning, Adam Peeples, Daniel Peeples, Luke Peeples, Bob Peeples, Al Duff and Andrew Duff.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Friday and from 12 to 1 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
