Sidney F. Hood, 98, passed peacefully into heaven on November 18, 2015 in Pompano Beach, Florida. He was born in Syracuse, NY, the only child to Sidney and Kathryn Hood. He grew up in Oakfield, NY where he met and married Rowena, his bride of 59 years before she entered heaven in 2001.
Sid attended the University of Syracuse where he studied engineering. During World War II, he worked at Doehler Die Casting in Batavia manufacturing supplies to defend the US during the war. Later he worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester before exchanging the snow banks of western New York for the sunny beaches of South Florida.
In 1953, Sid moved to Fort Lauderdale and purchased Bedwell Glass & Sales with his wife Rowena. Together they ran the company for 29 years before retiring. The next chapter began with traveling the country in an RV to escape Florida’s hot and humid months for adventures around the country. Sid loved the freedom he felt when he would get behind the wheel of “the bus” and drive. Favorite spots included the Colorado Rockies and the Great Smokey mountains. But he always loved coming home to his “rain forest” view on New River.
Later, Sid enjoyed volunteering at First Presbyterian Church. He served in the kitchen with the Adult Activities Committee for their Thursday lunches and joined the Pew Crew on Mondays to reorganize the church sanctuary after Sunday services.
John Knox Village became Sid’s home in February of 2011. He never imagined himself living in a “high-rise” apartment, but found he enjoyed watching the birds soar outside the window of his 15th floor. Watching the Goodyear Blimp (which he fondly called the Dirigible) take off and land also became a fascinating pastime. He would take walks around the Village and comment how nice it was to live in a “park” without having to do the yard work himself.
Sid is survived by his daughter, Tina Hood of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by cousins who were like nephews and nieces to him, Brian and Vivie Lewis of Marietta, GA, Clee and Becky Lewis of Belleview, FL, Steve Lewis of Davie, FL and Craig and Yvonne Lewis or Pembroke Pines, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer gifts be sent to John Knox Village Foundation 651 SW 6th Street Pompano Beach, FL 33060. Please designate gift for the Woodlands Fund for the new Health Center.
