Marguerite "Marge" Virginia Sharp Rhodes, 94, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2015, at home in Deerfield Beach, FL. Born April 2, 1921 in Huntington, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Lewis Sharp and Willa Mae Siders Sharp. She married the love of her life, the late Herman S. Rhodes, on September 13, 1941. She devoted herself to supporting her husband while he served in the Marines. Herman worked for Allstate Insurance and was transferred to Pompano Beach in 1959. Marguerite ended up living the rest of her days in sunny South Florida.
She is survived by her son and only child, Michael Rhodes of Deerfield Beach, FL; grandson, Adam Rhodes (Mollie) of West Palm Beach, FL; granddaughter, Dana Leigh Rhodes of Boca Raton, FL; great granddaughters, Ella and Lily Rhodes; and family friend Tom Starosta, whom she lovingly referred to as her second son. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters and was the last living out of her six siblings.
She spent her time as a stay at home mother and wife until Michael graduated high school. She attended BCC and majored in banking. She then started her career as a teller at Lighthouse Point Bank, then Oceanside Bank, before finally retiring as Operations Officer at Bank of America. She was a well known figure in her community, was beloved by her customers, and earned many life-long friends throughout her career.
Marguerite was a devout Christian and lived her life as such. She was a very involved and charitable member of First Baptist Church of Pompano Beach and served on the advisory committee of the senior adult group, the Trailblazers. She loved organizing the catering and activities, attending bible study and fellowship, and going on their group trips. She also had the distinction of being the first female counter of the church offering. Given her career, this was no surprise. She was a human calculator and especially excelled in finances.
She was also quite a bookworm and read the newspaper cover to cover daily and was always in the middle of a novel. She was a "foodie" and enjoyed showing her love for her family and friends by cooking and baking, to the delight of all. Marguerite had an adventurous spirit and developed a deep love for travel. She's been to nearly every U.S. State as well as visited Europe 5 times. Her favorite place to visit was Spain.
More than anything, she was an incredibly devoted and selfless mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, and she went above and beyond for the well-being and happiness of her family and was happiest while surrounded by them. She was known as "Nana" by her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as "Aunt Marge" to her nieces and nephews, many admitting that she was their favorite aunt. Her unconditional love, guidance and clever wit will be dearly missed by all.
Marguerite will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens at 200 W. Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064 on Sunday May 31, 2015 at 3:00 pm. There will be no visitation.
In liu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Pompano Beach, 138 NE 1st St. Pompano Beach, FL 33060. A note can be included that it's designated for Trailblazers Senior Adult Ministry and is in memory of Marguerite Rhodes. Donations will go to provide fellowship meals for seniors who otherwise cannot afford. There will be church envelopes at the service on Sunday for this as well.
