Davis, Dr. James K., 96, of Boca West Country Club, died Friday, March 30, 2012 in Boca Raton, FL after a brief illness. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Davis graduated from the University of Michigan with a PhD in Biological Chemistry. Dr. Davis had a distinguished 40 year career as a scientist with Corning, Inc. He was the first manager of Corning's Electronics Research and Development Laboratory. Dr. Davis was a past member of many technical and honorary societies including the American Chemical Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, IRE, and IEEE. He was the head of the research laboratory at Corning for the late Admiral Rickover of the U.S. Navy to help direct the development of the first US nuclear submarine. Dr. Davis was also a member of the committee of scientists that were chosen to work on the Manhattan Project, under the direction of President Franklin Roosevelt. He was also selected to the US Dept. of Energy senior technical consulting board. The board drafted an environmental impact statement on the solidification of high level nuclear waste. Dr. Davis also helped the British develop their first radar systems during WWII. Dr. Davis was married to the late Madalene Lamb Gorman. They had a wonderful 63 year marriage!
