Michel Beauchamp, 73, of Baie D’Urfé, QC, died peacefully at home on June 27, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Mike was a born leader and gifted storyteller who found humour in every situation and eagerly shared that perspective with those around him.
Born on October 4, 1946 and raised near Lakeshore Drive in Pointe-Claire, Mike was an energetic, curious youngster who found his passion in education and went on to obtain his teaching diploma. A devoted husband and father, he married fellow teacher Beverley Doe in 1972 and settled near his childhood home to raise their two children, delighting their Valois neighbours with his legendary backyard rink, elaborate birthday celebrations, and enthusiastic participation in community sports activities. Through family vacations to Fortune Rocks Beach in Maine and an epic road trip across Canada, he fostered a love of nature and adventure in his children. A dedicated teacher for over thirty years at schools across the Island of Montreal, he made every lesson a game and was many students’ favourite, creating memories to last a lifetime through annual trips to Ranch Massawippi and fundraising campaigns for artistic and environmental projects. A dynamic basketball and hockey coach, he pursued advanced certification to hone his craft and led several underdog teams to multiple powerhouse wins.
Shortly after his retirement, Mike moved to Baie D’Urfé, where he was an active member of Municipal Council and of Volunteer Citizens on Patrol (VCOP), initiating a tradition of uninterrupted service that persists to this day. As a volunteer at the local library, Mike took great pleasure in swapping news with fellow patrons and reading his way through the mystery section. Quick to embrace Pickleball as his new sport of choice, he also instituted walks under the Dome to encourage active living among fellow seniors. When he wasn’t leading the pack, he was cheering on the Habs, nurturing his garden oasis, doting on his golden retriever, and carrying out home improvements with gusto. With his wife Bev at his side, Mike returned to Fortune Rocks Beach annually for long walks by the ocean, punctuated by glorious sunrises and sunsets. His greatest joy in recent years was welcoming his granddaughter to the family and guiding her with unwavering attention through the adventures of early childhood, carving out a special place in her heart for her “Mikey” who will be forever cherished and missed.
Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife Beverley, children Martin (Lindsay) and Laura (Steven), granddaughter Mélodie, siblings Nicole and Jacques, and many other family members and friends. Along with his parents Charlemagne Beauchamp and Thérèse Quesnel, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law Doris Fauteux and his brother-in-law Wayne Doe.
