John was born on October 27, 1930 in New Jersey.
John sported an immense amount of energy his entire life. He grew up in Forest Hills, New York, where he delivered groceries by bicycle for his family’s store during the war years. He enjoyed summers at his family’s home in Northport, on Long Island’s north shore. As a cadet at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, he served as captain of the track team, among other posts and activities. He loved wearing his tailored gray military uniform, which complemented his handsome physique and winning smile.
After graduating from Adelphi University, John continued to run in amateur events for the New York Athletic Club, including a track and field meet in Madison Square Garden in which he took first place in the mile.
He married Marjorie Ray in 1957 and became a salesman for IBM, a successful career that lasted until 1974. He said that it was the most satisfying work of his life. After John’s first marriage dissolved, he married again in 1975 and began a career in real estate that took him to Montreal before he settled in Dallas, where he developed a specialty in leasing warehouses.
John enjoyed discussing geopolitics and history, playing chess, and lingering over a cup of coffee at his favorite cafes in Dallas. He lived independently until his last days, browsing in bookstores, dining at his favorite places, and conversing with friends.
He is survived by his three children, Christine Moore of Fort Collins, Colorado, John R. Kroeger of Bethesda, Maryland, and Anne Kroeger of Miles City, Montana, and his six grandchildren, Madeline Moore and Jeffrey Moore, Nicole Kroeger and Theodore Kroeger, and Mariah Gibson and Cameron Rys-Sikora.
