He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on September 5, 1924 to Justino V. and Ligia A. (Periera). He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 73 years, Adeline Kathleen Thomas Mello, daughter Janet J. Manchee and son Thomas S. Mello. He is survived by his daughter Patricia.
He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren James Justin Manchee, wife Melissa Manchee, great- grandchildren twins; Alex and Isabella Manchee, Jeffrey William Manchee, wife Danell Manchee and great- grandchild Joshua Manchee; Kathryn Elizabeth Cartiglia, husband Filippo Cartiglia of London, great- grandchildren Charles and Lucia Cartiglia; Michael Daniel Manchee and wife Heather Manchee, Maryanna Manchee and great grandchildren Andrew and Travis Gilbertson, Nicole Michelle Mello and great- grandchild Alyssa Mello, Justin Thomas Mello, wife Amanda Mello and great- grandchildren Caden and Owen Mello, and son-in-law William Manchee. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He began his career in 1948 at the Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company as supervisor of machine accounting, he worked at the Boston Music Company and taught at Northeastern University. He later joined Raytheon where he held various positions and relocated his family in 1963 to Ventura, CA, where he served as a manager of information processing systems in the missile and space division in Oxnard, CA. In 1970, he moved once more, this time to Richardson, TX where he took on the role of Director of Information Technology at Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas until his retirement.
Beyond his professional achievements, Herb was deeply involved in the American Cancer Society after his throat cancer diagnosis in 2000. He provided invaluable support to many laryngectomy patients, guiding them through their cancer journeys.
He faced another battle with stage IV metastatic prostate cancer. Despite his health challenges, he remained a fighter, never losing his sense of humor and maintaining an unwavering commitment to his family.
Herb had a passion for fishing, history, woodworking, drawing and the sea.
Those who knew him will miss his wit, resilience and unwavering support. Special thanks to his dear friend, Lord Gary Stewart, who was always there to fix something he broke including his computer.
The family wishes to acknowledge their gratitude for the compassionate care given by his caregiver, Huy Li.
