Betty was born in Orange, Texas on March 15, 1942 to Wilson and Virginia Garrett. She grew up in Itasca, Texas where she cheered and graduated valedictorian of her high school class. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics at the University of Texas where she met Dick Vilven, to whom she was married for over 54 years.
Betty took great pride in her role as a teacher spending the majority of her 20 plus year career with the Plano Independent School District where she was respected and loved by her students.
A devout United Methodist, Betty dedicated much of her time and energy to Westshore United Methodist in Richardson followed by First United Methodist Church Plano where she played active roles in a variety of ministries.
Betty was the loving mother of Richard and Garrett and their wives Susan and Sandy. Perhaps one of Betty's greatest roles was that of grandmother to her five grandchildren. She could be found on the sidelines of games, the audience of activities or as the always willing sitter usually with fresh baked cookies.
Betty will be welcomed to heaven by her parents Wilson and Virginia Garrett and will be remembered by her husband Dick; sons, Richard (Susan) and Garrett (Sandy)Vilven; grandchildren Blake, Conrad, Garrett, Dean and Fiona Vilven; brother Jenks Garrett (Denise), sisters Patricia Dumas and Lindy Sewell (Stan); nephew Blake Dumas (Keri); nieces Lisa Farhat (David), Amanda Taylor (Scott), and Kate Garrett.
