Robert was born on October 8, 1960, to Mary Kathryn Haines and Clarence G. Reid in Pittsburgh. After Robert graduated from North Hills high school in 1978, he went on to complete a bachelor's at the University of Pittsburgh, a master's at the Illinois Institute of Technology and another at Carnegie Mellon University, and his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University.
With multiple degrees in civil and environmental engineering, he launched a successful and rewarding career as an engineer and university professor. He ran his own consulting business for over 20 years, and he taught engineering for just as long. Robert was an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University and Point Park University, and he also taught at Lafayette College and Geneva College. His most recent job was at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin.
In 1986, Robert met Paula A. Groetzinger. Robert and Paula were married in 1988, had two children, and celebrated nearly 35 years of marriage. Robert was heavily involved in ministry throughout his whole life. He served as a deacon for City Reformed Presbyterian Church, helped with Bethany Baptist Church's different ministries, and led mission trips to several countries, including the Philippines, Cambodia, and Peru.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Clarence G. Reid; his mother, M. Kathryn Reid; and his brother, C. Donald Reid. He is survived by his wife, Paula A. (Groetzinger) Reid; two sisters, Judith E. Reid and Linda K. Kelly; two children, Timothy R. Reid and Ashley L. Reid; and two grandchildren, Jeziel I. Jiménez Reid and Ariah J. A. Jiménez Reid.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm on January 8, 2023, at the Greenfield Chapel (3929 Coleman St., Pittsburgh, PA 15207). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to SEAPC, an organization Robert partnered with for years. (Donate at seapc.org/donate/)
