McKnight Road, a major artery from North Hills to downtown Pittsburgh. "Robert J. Machin" was the brains behind it. The designer for that very roadway and many other well-known roadways in the Pittsburgh area. In 1963 The Fort Duquesne Bridge main span was finished but with “red tape” and governmental disagreements kept it from being completed for several more years earning the nickname “The Bridge to Nowhere” “Bob” was instrumental with the designs to that expansion.
“Bob” born in Asheville North Carolina on March 8, 1929 to the late Marino and Madeline (Solari) Machin. His family moved to the Pittsburgh area where he attended Perry High School and Geneva College in Beaver Falls.
He retired after 43 years with the State of Pennsylvania.
Bob enjoyed the simple things in life; good food, good friends, bowling, golf and Crown Royal.
He led a fulfilling life that was driven by accomplishments and love for his family.
Robert was married to the late Nettie Cora Fox and the late Joanne Zmenkowski.
He leaves behind the greatest joy his family: Joyce Speer (John McCloskey), Cindy (Steve) Misencik, Chester (Rosann) Zmenkowski and the late Richard Zmenkowski.
He was immensely proud of his grandchildren; Jamie (Jerry) Ballentine, late Tammy Speer, Carrie (Tyler)Brown, Robert Speer, Stacy Misencik, Kristi Allen, Leeann (Michael) DiCicco, Kevin (Kellie) Zmenkowski, Brett Zmenkowski and his 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Preceded in death by numerous brothers and a sister.
Friends are welcomed to the H.P. Brandt Funeral Home 1032 Perry Hwy Pittsburgh PA 15237 on November 14, 2021 from 2PM to 8PM. A blessing service will take place on November 15, 2021 at funeral home at 11:00AM with interment to follow at Allegheny County Memorial Park.
