Age 88, died peacefully at Cumberland Crossing Assisted Living Residence in McCandless on Thursday, July 15, 2010 following an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of Vera, who died earlier this year, and son of the late Thomas A. and Edna Pesh Gilroy. Robert grew up in the Troy Hill section of Pittsburgh and attended Allegheny High School where he was President of his senior class. Mr. Gilroy proudly served his country during World War II. He was a Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge and earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal for his courage. After returning home, he attended the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Gilroy had a successful career as an industrial engineer in the steel industry and retired as senior Vice President of Cyclops Corporation (now AK Steel) of Pittsburgh. Previously, he was President of Northern Engineering Corporation and was an executive for Crucible Steel Company. An avid golfer for many years, Mr. Gilroy served several terms as President of Highland Country Club and was a lifetime member, where he enjoyed playing cards and talking about sports with his friends. He also was the President of the North Allegheny AARP Chapter, and served on the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau, Divine Providence Hospital and the Board of Lutheran Associated Services. Robert is survived by his children: Robert C Gilroy, Jr. (Judith) of Thiensville Wisconsin; Marilyn Gilroy (Arthur Schwartz) of Princeton Junction, New Jersey; Joan Rigby (Thomas) of St. Charles, Missouri; Thomas Gilroy (Cynthia Baker) of Wilmette, Illinois, all of whom loved him deeply and remember his generosity and sense of humor. Mr. Gilroy is grandfather to five grandchildren: Laurie Schmitt (Michael), Bryan Rigby (Sarah), Sara LaMartina (Nicholas) and Samuel and Charlie Gilroy. He also has five great grandchildren, Caitlin, Ben, Meghan, Allison, and Spencer. Friends will be received on Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the H.P.
