She was a public-school librarian, classroom teacher, and administrator in the Pittsburgh Public Schools for 34 years after earning a bachelor’s degree in Education from the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) and a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
She spent her retirement days traveling and chasing around her four grandchildren. She enjoyed watching all their school and sports activities. She was an avid Steelers fan who became a season ticket holder starting in 1971 when it was Three Rivers Stadium and had continued to support the Steelers ever since.
She was a member of the Mars United Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Louis V. Lucas. She is survived by her son L. Victor (Christine) Lucas, her 4 grandchildren Heather (Steven) Burton, Shannon (Brian) Farabaugh, Victoria (Lance) Astorino, and Mark (Tommie) Lucas, her 10 great grandchildren, her brothers Lawrence Woods and William Woods and sisters Eleanor Taylor and Virginia Smith as well as many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Helen will be held Thursday, August 25 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home, Inc., 1032 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
The funeral service will be at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home at 1:00 pm on August 26, followed by the burial at Allegheny County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate a book to a public library or to a school library.
