Mrs. Mertz and family, 

I just wanted to express my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Mr. Mertz was a wonderful member of the McKnight church family and will be missed deeply by his church family. I loved seeing him every Sunday and of course hearing him ask me "are you married" what a great man he was! Always smiling and never failing to put a smile on the face of someone else! He always made me feel special! he will be missed!

Aunt Virginia,David & Amy, We are sorry for the loss of fun-loving, always giving,dear George.  What remarkable wit,charm & such a sense of humor! Through George's life, he demonstrated his strong work ethic & spirit of service.  We remember George sharing some light-hearted WWII stories, even looking at the bright side of those dark days.  George was an outstanding man of integrity, a gift to all, but especially to each one of you, so close to his heart.  We always enjoyed being in his presence and yours, dear Virginia.  You have our deepest condolences.

To the Mertz Family, I grew up with George, Genevieve and the rest of the Mertz Clan.  He used to tease us so much.  Haven't seen him for some years, you have my deepest sympathy, and George, "Good bye, rest in peace."  Sweetpea...

Our deepest sympathies on the passing of your beloved George. He was truly the best of men, and is remembered with love by our family - mostly for his matchless wit and humor!

George was our neighbor for three years and we will never forget him. He called our toddler son "Herm" and taught him to play the harmonica. He invited me to come upstairs and look at his "etchings" and gave kisses "with feeling." He shared every good thing in his garden, tried to make us like Limburger cheese, and shoveled our driveway on snowy mornings - at 89 years of age!!

We were blessed to know this rare gem of a man. Thank you for sharing him with us, and for letting us share the burden of your loss and the rejoicing at George's homecoming in heaven.

Uncle George, Gloria is right.  The stories of our memories will be told forever.  One Christmas Eve you came with a tree.  You brought all seven of us school lunch boxes that we carried for years.  After a spring shower, you walked with us out to the apple orchard to demonstrate how it can rain twice!  You reclaimed the creek bed and planted an amazing garden and shared the harvest, even the gladiolus.  When you came to pick raspberries wearing shorts and a tank top, you did not hesitate to go right into the middle of the patch.  That's the day you told me that one of your happiest memories was when the doctor said he could save your foot after a coal truck ran over it (in childhood).  Then, you had some of Mama's rhubarb pie and sat and talked with Daddy, comparing stories about the pocketknives you each carried.   You were fun-loving,kind, and generous; a lover of life. We will always smile at the mention of your name. All of us miss you and extend our sympathy to Aunt Virginia, David, Amy and to all who loved you.

Whoever was in the prescence of Mr. Mertz,couldn't help but smile.I still have the thank you card he hand-made me for giving him a cupcake.What a wonderful man!The world was a better place having him in it.We will all miss his smile and humor.How lucky we were to have known him!Our deepest sympathies to you,Mrs.Mertz.

George was an adorable man and we loved him to bits. One of God's greatest gifts is humor, and George was generously endowed. With that and his loving heart, our loss is Heaven's gain.

Uncle George can never be forgotten - what a delightful, colorful, unique and loving man! We lost a special part of our family with his passing. May, you Aunt Virginia, David, Amy and families and the whole Mertz extended family, find comfort in remembering the joy and laughter that he brought us all. We'll be telling his stories for decades to come.

Virginia, David, Amy and the extended Mertz Family, our deepest condolences on your (our) loss. While we are all saddened, is there anyone that doesn't have a smile on their face when recalling one of George's quips, jokes or antics? No one could make us laugh at life like George. He lit up every room he walked into and he will forever be a part of those who knew him. As a man of faith, his unparalleled love of life and love for those he held dear is without equal. It has been an honor, joy and blessing to have known him. Thanks Be to God for sharing George for 92 wonderful years.

I was so sorry to hear of  George's passing.  He was always very kind to me at the McKnight Church, always greeting me with a kind word and smile.  We take heart in knowing that he lived a life full of years, yet  we would wish he could have been with us longer.  May God's good blessing be  with you and guide  you through the  days ahead.  Audrey joins me in these  thoughts.

Everyone who knew George loved his quick wit, outgoing personality, his love of country, and being quite a character in the best sense of the word. We will miss him terribly for he was truly an extraordinary person and a best friend to all who were fortunate enough to meet him.

I have fond memories of George calling me "Herman" when I was a toddler. He & Don came to repair the plumbing at my Grandfather's apartment house.  Many years later, I ran into him at the Islam Grotto, when my Father was installed as Monarch.  My thoughts & prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Mertz. He was an AMAZING man and such a joy to know! I loved seeing him every sunday at church and he always knew how to make me laugh. He will deeply missed by the Mcknight Church Family. My favorite memory of Mr. Mertz is every sunday he use to come up to me and say "hey are you married" Mrs. Mertz used to come over and say "George leave those girls alone" It always made me laugh. I will really miss Mr. Mertz. You are all in my thoughts and prayers!
