Gary was born March 19, 1946, in Pickens, SC and was a son of the late Joel Robert Porter and Annice Reynolds Porter. Gary graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1968, with a Bachelors degree in science. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he became a military police officer and earned several medals including the National Defense Service Medal, and Expert Marksman medals. After his honorable discharge from the military, he began his engineering career with Milliken, where he retired after 33 years. Gary loved serving the Lord and through his life journey, he has been a Deacon and has even taught Sunday School class. He was a member of Crossway Community Church in Pendleton, SC. Having graduated from USC, Gary was very much, an avid Gamecock fan. He also enjoyed golfing, woodworking and building furniture.
Gary loved spending time with his family and grandsons. He leaves behind his loving wife of 50 years, Dawn Sears Porter; two sons, Randy Porter (April) and Kevin Porter; one brother, Dwight Porter (Dorothy) and one sister, Patricia Chapman. He is also survived by his two grandsons that he loved dearly, Caleb and Avery Porter, and his furry companion, Blue.
A visitation for Gary will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Hwy., Pickens, SC 29671. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 3:30 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2410 Gentry Memorial Hwy., Pickens, SC 29671. There will be military honors and the Reverend C.W. Hicks officiating.
