Rosie Lopez was born in Abernathy Tx on May 15, 1932 to Ralph Lopez and Agnes Sanchez. Rosie spent her childhood living between Texas and Colorado and had 3 sisters and 2 brothers, Margaret, Mary, Nancy, Ralph and Benny.
Despite the many challenges Rosie faced in life, it never seemed to affect her love for life itself. Rosie was a pillar of strength in her community and devoted many years to giving back to others, especially those who sacrificed for our county. Although she herself was not a member of the US military, Rosie found another way to be of service to others as an avid member of the American Legion Post 41 where she served as President and Sargeant at Arms in the Womens Auxiliary. Rosie was a social butterfly and one of her many strengths was the ability to make friends wherever she went. Rosie never met a stranger and her family could always count on running into an old friend whenever they went out to eat or ran errands with her.
Rosie had a lust for life and spent many of her years expressing that through travel, socialization, dancing and music. Those who knew Rosie, know that her sense of humor was often unmatched and even on the toughest of days could find a reason to laugh, even if it was at her own expense. Rosie had a one in a million smile and was always ready for a silly selfie with her grandkids. Rosie was Always such a good sport and never passed on an opportunity to smile and do her “Rosie pose” for the camera.
Of all the things that can be said about our Madrecita- the one thing you cannot say about her is that she wasn’t a survivor. Rosie Quintana is the true definition of what it means to be an overcomer. She never gave up when life got difficult and never threw in the towel- Rosie always adapted and found a way to overcome regardless of her circumstances. She absolutely refused to live by others rules and she lived her life to the best of her ability. Rosie always did the best with what she had and would give her last dollar to anyone in need. Rosie was a straight shooter and you always knew where you stood with her. She didn’t sugar coat anything.
Rosie was woman of great faith, strength and courage and she instilled hard work, ambition and determination into her children and grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, friend and sister. Ater an 8-month battle with colon and liver cancer, Rosie succumbed to the illness on June 17th, surrounded by her loved ones. Rosie is preceded in death by her husband Jesus “Chuy” Valenzuela; her parents Ralph Lopez and Agnes Sanchez; her son Frank “Punky” Carranza; nephew Will Navarette; and beloved granddaughter Yolanda “ Pelona“ Romero. Rosie is survived by her children Yolanda Romero; Mary Louise Angulo (Gilbert); Ray “Ric” Quintana and beloved daughter-in-law Kathy; Diana Gonzales (Richard); Darlene Miranda; Lori Quintana and Alex Marez (Christina), as well as many beloved grand (19), great grand (34) and great great grand (8) children.
Our madrecita was a great woman who touched countless lives. Without her, the road ahead will be tough for many of us. She was the rock that kept us strong.
“Nana, this is going to be a tough road without you but we’ll do what you always told us — keep looking forward and pressing on. Rest in peace.”
Services will be held Friday July 2nd at 9 am at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary and Cemetery located at 719 North 27Th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009 in the Serenity Chapel.
