Bob (as he preferred to be addressed) was a gregarious, outgoing man who could not resist telling a good story.
He was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but was immensely proud of obtaining his US citizenship later in life.
He attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, and his team won the National Championship in 1957, the whole team later being inducted into the CC Hall of Fame It was here that he met his first wife, Elizabeth Long, with whom he had three children: Diane (Doug) Swanson, Karen Southwood and Robert Southwood. They divorced after 25 years, whereupon Bob found his most treasured interest, Joyce Schoenfeld, who also had three children that he took into his heart: Donna (Scott) Whitley, Randy Schoenfeld, and Pete (Andrea) Schoenfeld.
After a lifetime working as a geophysicist, he started a second career running a hotel with his bride, eventually retiring in Texas to dedicate more of his time to golf and friends. Moving for a short time to Las Cruces, NM, Bob and Joyce chose to move to Phoenix to live out the remainder of their days. They will both be sorely missed.
He is survived by his children, Diane Swanson, Donna Whitley, Pete Schoenfeld, Karen Southwood and Bob Southwood; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.phoenixmemorialmortuary.com for the Southwood family.
