Maria Mercedes Tapia Doom was born May 9, 1953 in Chuquicamata, Chile, a small mining town in the Andes, to Jose Tapia and Ermelina Ledezma. The family later moved to Antofagasta, Chile where she grew up and attended school. Her parents decided to send her to the US in 1973 in order to attend school and escape the civil unrest in the country due to the economic chaos of a Socialist government. She was taken into the home of the parents of a close missionary family serving in Chile, who lived in Paducah, KY, started attending Paducah Community College then graduated from Murray State University majoring in Medical Technology.
Maria married Don Doom who she met at Paducah Community College, on Dec 30, 1977 in Paducah. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1981 where she worked initially in the medical field as a Medical Technologist then homeschooling and finally in the Chandler School District at Hartford Elementary as Parent Liaison Director. In addition to her husband of 43 years, Maria leaves behind two daughters both living in Phoenix, Milka Doom-Mendoza (Mike) and Ana Alvarez-Doom (Benny) as well as two grandchildren, Camila and Daniel. In addition, she is survived by a brother and sister living in the Phoenix area, Jose Tapia (Maggi) and Milka Steiner (Brian), as well as one sister living in Antofagasta, Chile, Cecilia Tapia Ledezma (Ricardo).
Due to the health concerns during the pandemic, there is no memorial service planned. Instead, the family has setup a Maria Doom Memorial Facebook page where anyone can share their memories, thoughts or photos. The location of the memorial page is:
