Lucy Candelaria Rodriguez was born in Concho, Arizona on May 22, 1942. Daughter of Lancaster and Petrita Candelaria, and grew up with several brothers and sisters: Perciliano, Lancaster, Sobeida, Domingo, Mary, Charlotte, Doroteo, and James.
Lucy often shared stories of her childhood, living in a small town like Concho, being the youngest of her siblings and the way they lived in the 40s surrounded by a rural community.
Her family eventually moved near Casa Grande, Arizona, where she met a “handsome, suave guy with a cool car” named Donato Genaro Rodriguez, but everyone called him Ron. They soon spent time together at a “sock hop” where they danced the night away. They fell in love and married in 1959. Lucy and Ron decided that Phoenix, Arizona was where they would live and raise their 10 children: Chris, Valerie, Andy, Daniel, Diane, Mario, Maria, Andrea, Angelique, and Jacqueline.
The Rodriguez family was well known in their small community within South Phoenix, as they befriended many and had an active presence in the neighborhood. Lucy and Ron were a memorable couple, with their big family; sarcastic father, and devoted mother.
Friends and family remember Lucy as a beautiful woman, full of life and a smile that brightened a room. She was so friendly that she made everyone she met feel like family. Her sense of humor was a constant bubble of joy. Her hugs were like a warm quilt filled with love. She serenaded everyone with silly songs, especially her young grandchildren. Her dance moves were legendary, and she could be spotted on the dance floor at any party. She prided herself on her good food, good-looking family, and all the tales she could share about the life she lived.
Lucy was preceded in death by her children, Ronald Christopher Rodriguez, Maria Elizabeth Rodriguez, and the love of her life, Donato Genaro Rodriguez. Lucy made sure that all who passed before her were kept alive with recollections and stories of the time she spent with each one, so that they continue to live on.
The Queen of the Rodriguez family had 29 Grandchildren, 36 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. When she’d sit and reflect on her family, she’d recall how fortunate and blessed she was for the life she was given. She made sure that when you were with her you knew just how much she loved you and how proud she was that you were one of hers.
