Herbert Roland Hinds was born on September 25th, 1931, in Chicago (Cook County) Illinois. He was the youngest of four children born to Roland and Lillian (Lang) Hinds. Herbert passed away on September 11th, 2022, just fourteen days shy of his 91st birthday. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family upon his passing to God’s Kingdom.
Herbert married his beloved wife of 67 years on August 6th, 1955, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Kansasville, Wisconsin.
Herbert was drafted into the military on January 16th, 1955, and was honorably discharged on January 17th, 1957.
Upon leaving the military, He immediately went back to work on the farm. His first job was at Ed Millers farm on highway J in Racine County Wisconsin milking cows. During the next two years he worked at Ed's farm and then when Bong air base came in, was forced to move (as his home was in the air base way) to Antioch, Illinois where he worked on Homer Williams farm for a few months. After that he sold Kirby vacuum cleaners for a spell. In December of 1959, he started with American Motors Corporation just two days before the birth of his second son Stephen. In May of 1966 Herbert went back to work on Jolly Jay's farm in Kenosha Wisconsin working for Jim Sorensen. This was by far Herb's most rewarding job as his boss was more than just another person, he was more like the close friend you always wanted to have, and this made the work very enjoyable. Herb worked on Jolly Jay's farm until it was sold in March of 1976.
On April 18th, 1976, Herbert left the family in Kenosha while he went out to Phoenix, Arizona to find new employment and a suitable home for the rest of the family. A big part of the decision to go to Arizona was due to his sister Luella whom he had not seen in about 20 years lived there. It was in June of 76 that he came back to Wisconsin and packed up the family to make the move to Phoenix. Of the eight children, seven would be going to Phoenix. His son David stayed for a time in Wisconsin.
Moving first to Sunnyslope in Phoenix, and then before the end of the year relocated to the home in Paradise Valley, where he lived out the remainder of his life.
In Arizona, he had a number of jobs starting at a security company and then his last adventure was with Target where he worked until his retirement in the early 2000’s.
He had many interests through out his life that he really enjoyed. He was big on politics and did a number of turns working at the voting polls during election time. He was an avid follower of the News in many forms; on the television, radio, and in print. Reading the daily newspapers, consumer reports, and readers digest magazines along with working through word searches he stimulated his mind.
He liked all sports, watching them on television and even in person if he could. His baseball team of all time was the Chicago Cubs. Once when we went to the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cubs, he cheered for those Cubbies from the Arizona stands!
He was a devout Catholic and spent a number of years as an usher in the church as well as being a Eucharistic minister bringing communion to parishioners unable to attend in person. Once he was no longer able to attend the church himself, he attended online.
His biggest passion in life was his wife as she was the love of his life, and he would do anything for her. They enjoyed everything together, attending and being active with Worldwide Marriage Encounter, they were both members in the Tops Organization, and loved to go to their favorite restaurant Carlos O’Briens. During his last days he re-affirmed to us over and over that we were to take care of our mother! He loved her to his very last breath.
Herbert was preceded in death by his both his parents, his two brothers Bill and Russ, his sister Luella and two grandchildren Amber and James. He is survived by his loving wife Gertrude, his eight children, David Hinds (Judy) of Great Falls, MT, Stephen Hinds (Diane) of Phoenix, AZ, Deborah Rasmussen (Scott) of Clarkdale, AZ, Ronald Hinds (Marilyn) of Claremore, OK, Timothy Hinds (Terri) of Columbia, TN, Susan Hinds of Phoenix, AZ, Brenda Campagna (Mark) of Phoenix, AZ, and Luella Trudell (Frank) of Golden City, MO. Along with 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends that will miss him greatly! A celebration of life memorial will be held at a later date.
