Donald Charles Barr passed away on January 4, 2022 at the age of 89. He was born on July 18, 1932 to Howard and Irene Barr in Lead, South Dakota.
Don spent the first 10 years of his childhood growing up in Lead, South Dakota; a gold mining town in the Black Hills near Mount Rushmore. When he was eleven years old, his family moved to Milwaukee, WI and eventually settled in West Allis, WI a year later. He was an excellent student in High School and an accomplished swimmer on the high school swim team.
Don met the love of his life and future wife, Joan Coppersmith at a high school basketball game between rivaling schools. Don went to Central High School and Joan went to Nathan Hale in West Allis. Don and Joan were married on July 20, 1952. He attended and graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He had three children during his college years and three more shortly after completing his pharmacy degree and passing the state board of pharmacy exam. He moved his family from Oak Creek, WI to Phoenix, AZ in 1963.
Don’s work history included working as a drug store clerk, drug salesman for Abbott Labs, manager of Doctors Park Pharmacy in Kenosha, WI, a pharmacist at several retail drug stores in the Phoenix area, owner of Northwest Pharmacy in Glendale, AZ and his favorite and longest held job was manager of the pharmacy at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ.
Don loved the Lord and the foundation for his life was his faith. Don’s greatest joy was marrying the love of his life and having a large family. He often spoke about how much he loved his family. He enjoyed traveling which included many cross-country road trips with his wife and children, going on cruises and international trips. He was a skilled craftsman in his favorite hobby - woodworking. He made wooden bowls on a lathe using different colors of exotic woods and beautiful baby cradles for many of his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife Joan; his children - Dale Kvittem-Barr (Barb), Keith Barr (Doris), Brian Barr (Tang), Leanne Larkins (Ken), Laurie Johnson (Paul); 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and brothers Lowell and Jerry. He was preceded in death by his daughter Karen Glaser (Clark).
