

Daniel Eugene Moore passed away at home in Phoenix surrounded by family and friends on December 24, 2010. Dan was born in Tucson on June 10, 1917, to James Folsom Moore and Ola Loflin Moore of Bisbee, Arizona, where Folsom was a publisher of the Bisbee Daily Review. Dan graduated from Bisbee High School in 1934, the University of Arizona in 1939, and the University of Arizona College of Law in 1947. In 1943 he married Hilda Jane Young, a native of Canton, Ohio. A U.S. Navy pilot in World War II, the Naval Historical Office credits Dan and his PB4Y crew from VPB-117 for having shot down five enemy aircraft in the South China Sea. His awards include a Presidential Unit Citation, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star and ten Air Medals. Dan returned to Bisbee in 1946 and raised three children. He started the law firm of Moore, Vlahovich & Greenwood. In 1968 he lost his beloved Hilda to cancer. He moved to Phoenix in 1969. In 1974 he married Janet Nichols Selway, his beloved and devoted wife of 36 years. He co-founded the Arizona Inter-Faith Coalition On Energy (AZICE) and was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Dan is survived by his wife Janet Moore, daughter Jane Callahan-Moore, daughter Marguerite Moore Callaway, son Dan, Jr., and his wife Barbara, granddaughters Sara Fighter, Jennifer Batza and her husband Shawn Jones, Catherine Batza and her partner Kellie Magnuson, great granddaughter Sabine Batza, great grandson Elliot Asher Magnuson Batza and stepsons Jack Brazelton Selway and his wife Sherry and James Jillson Selway and his wife Sandy. Dan’s sister Lulu Marguerite Brophy (Maggie Lu), her husband Jim and their son Mike Brophy preceded him in death. Surviving members of Maggie Lu and Jim Brophy’s family include Jim and Sandy Brophy, Mike’s widow Marilyn Brophy, Steve and Lori Brophy, Dan and Carleen Brophy, Polly Brophy Moffit and her husband Rick, Kate Brophy McGee and her husband Bob, Paul and Julie Brophy. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Valley and Amelia ‘Hena’ Tofavaha for the extraordinary care and love they gave to Dan during his multi-year struggle against Parkinsons’ disease. The family also extends special thanks to The Very Reverend W. Nicholas Knisely and the congregation of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral for the spiritual support they gave Dan and his family. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Dan’s memory to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix AZ, 85014 or Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Friday December 31, at 10 am followed by a burial at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery’s Field of Honor, 2300 W.
